The Birkenbihl Method: learn a language word by word

The Birkenbihl Method promises: understand grammar without drilling rules. Its core is "decoding" – the word-by-word translation.

What is decoding?

When decoding, you transfer each sentence word by word into your language. The word order of the foreign language is preserved – you see directly how the foreign language is structured instead of learning isolated vocabulary.

Original (Spanish):
Alicia empezaba ya a cansarse de estar sentada con su hermana a la orilla del río.

Word for word:
Alice was-beginning already to tire-herself of being seated with her sister at the bank of the river.

In natural English:
Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the riverbank.

"Empezaba a cansarse" literally means "was beginning to tire herself" – English says "was getting tired." The word-by-word line shows the building blocks, the natural line shows the meaning.

Why your brain likes it

You learn meaning in context, not as a list. Stephen Krashen's Input Hypothesis says: language is acquired through comprehensible messages. Decoding makes every sentence immediately understandable – and lowers the stress of learning.

The four phases of the method

  1. Decoding – understand word by word.
  2. Active listening – read the text along silently while you listen.
  3. Passive listening – let the audio play in the background.
  4. Speaking practice – read aloud along and repeat.

This exact path is in the 4 steps of FlowLingua: overview → read along → absorb → shadowing. If you learn by reading apps, also see our guide to bilingual readers and why some learners switch from LingQ.

How FlowLingua implements this

FlowLingua supports 23 languages – from English, Spanish and French to Italian, Turkish, Russian, Japanese and Chinese. You bring your own material; the decoding is created automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Birkenbihl Method work for complete beginners?

Yes – decoding gives you understandable input from day one. You see the word-by-word meaning directly under each sentence, so you never face an incomprehensible text. The four phases build on each other: understand first, listen actively, absorb passively, then speak.

Do I need a teacher for the Birkenbihl Method?

No. The method is designed for self-study: any text you want to read becomes your material. FlowLingua prepares the decoding automatically, so you can start immediately with your own books, videos or audio. A tutor can complement it, but is not required.

Which languages does FlowLingua support?

FlowLingua supports 23 languages, including English, Spanish, French, Italian, Turkish, Russian, Japanese and Chinese. You import your own material and the decoding is created automatically – for Latin-script languages as well as non-Latin scripts, each with audio synchronization.
