The Birkenbihl Method: learn a language word by word
The Birkenbihl Method promises: understand grammar without drilling rules. Its core is "decoding" – the word-by-word translation.
What is decoding?
When decoding, you transfer each sentence word by word into your language. The word order of the foreign language is preserved – you see directly how the foreign language is structured instead of learning isolated vocabulary.
Why your brain likes it
You learn meaning in context, not as a list. Stephen Krashen's Input Hypothesis says: language is acquired through comprehensible messages. Decoding makes every sentence immediately understandable – and lowers the stress of learning.
The four phases of the method
- Decoding – understand word by word.
- Active listening – read the text along silently while you listen.
- Passive listening – let the audio play in the background.
- Speaking practice – read aloud along and repeat.
